Alabama 217

Northwestern spur from U.S. 45 at Eight Mile into northwestern Mobile County. The road is designated Lott Road throughout. The southernmost fifteen miles serves a scattering of newer subdivisions and older housing communities to the north of U.S. 98. Alabama 217, known as Lott Road, sees its landscape traverse pine forest lands for the remainder of its routing. The northern terminus occurs at Mobile County 21 to the southwest of Citronelle in the proverbial "middle-of-nowhere". Lott Road however, continues northward to Mobile County 96 (which becomes Mississippi 594) west of Citronelle as a dirt road. Counties: Mobile

Alabama 217 North
Departing U.S. 45 at Eight Mile within the city limits of Prichard along Alabama 217 northbound. Known as Lott Road, Alabama 217 travels westward 6.6 miles to the north end of Schillinger Road (Mobile County 31) with a scattering of residences and churches along the otherwise rural two lane highway. Photo taken 11/04/03.
The current north end of Schillinger Road as seen from Alabama 217 northbound. Construction will see Mobile County 31 extend northward to meet the Alabama 158 westward extension by 2006. This intersection is the only location in which Schillinger Road is displayed as Mobile County 31. Photo taken 11/19/03.
Alabama 217 northbound as it departs the Mobile County 31 intersection. Within the next three miles are the communities of Lott and Millertown. Photo taken 11/19/03.
A five point intersection exists as the west end of Mobile County 78. Better known as Spice Pond Road, Mobile 78 arcs to the northeast, linking Alabama 217 with U.S. 45 at the community of Kushla. To the left is the Spice Pond Road Extension. This two lane highway links Alabama 217 with nearby Mobile County 21/McCrary Road. Photo taken 11/19/03.
Alabama 217 gradually turns northwest than north after leaving the village of Lott. Ahead is the junction with Mobile County 21/McCrary Road at the village of Millertown. Photo taken 11/19/03.
A traffic signal is situated at the junction of Alabama 217 northbound with Mobile County 21. This is the last traffic light along Lott Road. 16.7 miles to the north is the terminus of Alabama 217. Coincidentally, it also occurs at Mobile County 21 (Earlville & Prine Roads). Photo taken 11/19/03.
And far to the north in forest country, is the northern terminus. The intersecting road is Mobile County 21. Unfortunately along this county highway, and in nearby Citronelle, Alabama 217 trailblazers and shields are not posted. Continuing straight Lott Road becomes a dirt road (notice the 35 mph speed limit on dirt roads signage in the background). Lott Road comes to an end a few miles northward at Mobile County 96 (the predecessor to Mississippi 594 westward). Photo taken 12/08/00.
Alabama 217 South
Alabama 217 southbound shield posted after the signalized intersection with Mobile County 31/Schillinger Road. The speed limit on Lott Road varies between 40 and 50 mph through to Eight Mile in Prichard. Photo taken 11/19/03.
Alabama 217 concludes at this intersection with U.S. 45 in Prichard. Lott Road continues one block to the east, ending at Alabama 213. Alabama 213 terminates also at U.S. 45, only two blocks to the south. This area is in economic despair, with many abandoned shops and homes. The hidden Alabama counterpart for U.S. 45 is Alabama 17, so similar to Alabama 213 and U.S. 43/Hidden Alabama 13, the numbering of Alabama 217 may also be considered a stem. Photo taken 11/04/03.
