Florida 60 East

Eastbound Florida 60
Florida 60 (Gulf to Bay Boulevard) east at Lake Drive (Pinellas County 385). Lake Drive travels north to Florida 590 (Drew Street) and south as Pinellas County 385 to McMullen Road in Largo. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Eastbound reassurance shield posted ahead of junction Pinellas County 1 (Keene Road) Keene Road constitutes a six-lane arterial route leading north to Dunedin and south to Largo. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Continuing east toward the intersection with Hercules Avenue (Pinellas County 425). Pinellas County 425 leads south to a subdivision beyond Lakeview Road in Clearwater and north to Greenbriar Boulevard and Belcher Road within unincorporated Pinellas County. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Nearing the single point urban interchange with U.S. 19. U.S. 19 constitutes several short segments of freeway connected by commercial arterials. Within Clearwater, the federal highway follows a freeway north to McCormick Drive and south to Seville Boulevard. A second freeway segment exists from Enterprise Road north to Republic Drive. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Frontage roads carry drivers to the U.S. 19 freeway from Florida 60 (Gulf to Bay Boulevard). U.S. 19 leads south into east Largo and east Pinellas Park. Photo taken 01/02/06.
A busy intersection exists below the U.S. 19 freeway on Florida 60. Motorists turning north next reach Countryside, Curley, and Tarpon Springs. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Leaving the interchange, Florida 60 passes by Clearwater Mall at Park Place Boulevard in east Clearwater. Photo taken 01/02/06.

Florida 60 encounters north-south Pinellas County Route 611 just prior to the Courtney Campbell Causeway over Old Tampa Bay. An auxiliary overhead touts the connections with Ruth Excerd Hall, Clearwater's performing arts center, and St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport, Pinellas County's main airport. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Pinellas County Route 611 is a major, north-south pseudo-freeway that extends north to Safety Harbor and East Lake and south via the Bayside Bridge to Pinellas Park, where it meets U.S. 19. Note the use of a grade separation at this intersection; Florida 60 traffic stops, while Pinellas County Route 611 traffic does not stop. Photo taken 12/21/03.

Bayshore Boulevard enters Florida 60 (Gulf to Bay Boulevard) at the east edge of the Clearwater urban area. Bayshore Boulevard straddles the marshy areas of Coopers Bayou and Alligator Lake leading north to Safety Harbor. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Florida 60 begins its trek across Old Tampa Bay via Courtney Campbell Causeway east of the traffic light with Damascus Road. Damascus Road spurs north to Clearwater Christian College. A tourist information center lies along Florida 60 west nearby. Photo taken 01/02/06.
Florida 60 narrows to four lanes along the Courtney Campbell Causeway (also referred to sometimes as Courtney Campbell Parkway). The four-lane roadway acts as an expressway with a handful of beach access points along its eight-mile course. Midway across Old Tampa Bay is the Hillsborough County line. The jersey barrier median separates traffic and allows drivers to use the road at higher speeds. Narrow frontage roads line both directions of the causeway, providing access to the water for fishing, picnicking, or swimming. Photos taken 01/02/06 & 02/21/06.
A handful of buildings rise along the eastern horizon from Rocky Point, an area of landing jutting southward from Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa. Photo taken 02/21/06.
Florida 60 ascends over the channel crossing through Courtney Campbell Causeway ahead of Ben T. Davis Municipal Beach. Photo taken 02/21/06.
A traffic light provides protected turns into the Davis Municipal Beach parking areas adjacent to Florida 60. A boat ramp, picnic pavilions, and narrow beaches are available to the general public here. Photo taken 02/21/06.
Florida 60 continues east toward Rocky Point over Old Tampa Bay. Photos taken 02/21/06.
A second signalized intersection lies at the east end of Ben T. Davis Municipal Beach. Photo taken 02/21/06.
Bay Harbor Drive stems south to office buildings from Florida 60 (Courtney Campbell Causeway). Much of the land at Rocky Point was developed by George Steinbrenner, noteworthy owner of the New York Yankees baseball club. Photo taken 02/21/06.
Rocky Point Drive crosses Florida 60 at the second Rocky Point traffic light. This signal can cause significant traffic delays during the evening peak hours of traffic. Photo taken 02/21/06.
Florida 60 east expands to three lanes in anticipation of the Florida 589 (Veterans Expressway) interchange at Memorial Highway. Photo taken 02/21/06. Photos taken 12/21/03 & 02/21/06.
The intersection with Bayport Drive at Florida 60, seen during initial construction for its upgrade to a full interchange. Bayport Drive spurs south to Bayport Plaza. Photos taken 06/23/07 & 02/21/06.
The second configuration of Florida 60's interchange with Florida 589 involved a hybrid intersection-interchange configuration where drivers bound for the Veterans Expressway northbound were required to queue at a traffic light along the Memorial Highway freeway north. This poorly designed interchange was intended to be temporary until a high-speed interchange could be built. The interchange is under construction now, but the freeway traffic light is still in use as of summer 2008. Photo taken 02/21/06. Photo taken 12/21/03 & 06/23/07.
Taking the northbound ramp to Florida 589 (Memorial Highway / Veterans Expressway), drivers initially turned south before looping northward into a signalized intersection with the Florida 60 westbound on-ramp to Courtney Campbell Causeway. A pare of guide signs advised motorists of the impending Exit 2B off-ramp to Independence Parkway and the Florida 589 transitions into the tolled expressway. Photo taken 02/21/06.
Florida 60's eastbound on-ramp to Florida 589 north with its freeway traffic light. The traffic light governs the movements of half of Memorial Highway northbound; the right-hand two lanes bypass the signal via a painted median. Photo taken 02/21/06.
The next exit along Florida 60 eastbound is the interchange with Florida 616, West Spruce Street. Some older maps show West Spruce Street as an extension of Florida 589, but it is signed as Florida 616. It is a short route that connects to Boy Scout Boulevard before ending at U.S. 92/Dale Mabry Highway to the east. This exit also serves as the primary connection to Tampa International Airport. Once on the transition ramp to Florida 616, a loop ramp provides the connection north into the airport. This movement however will be replaced with a high speed flyover as part of the Tampa International Airport Interchange Project. Photo taken 07/30/06.
Photos taken during the multi-year Tampa Airport Interchange construction project. The laser guided navigation system was installed over Florida 60 by mid-2006. Photos taken 10/28/06 & 06/23/07.
After Florida 616, the next exit along eastbound Florida 60/Memorial Highway is the junction with Interstate 275. Interstate 275 travels north (east) to meet Interstate 4 en route to Orlando and Interstate 75 en route to Ocala and Georgia. Interstate 275 heads southwest over Old Tampa Bay to enter Pinellas County and provide connections to St. Petersburg and the Sunshine Skyway en route to Southwestern Florida (Sarasota, Venice, Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, and Naples). Photo taken 07/30/06.
The right lane of Florida 60 east becomes exit only for Interstate 275 south, and the left three lanes continue along the Memorial Highway. Use the middle two lanes to reach Interstate 275 north to Interstate 4 east and Interstate 75 north.
Construction is underway to expand the southbound Interstate 275 ramp to two overall lanes. Additionally the congested loop ramp to northbound will be replaced in the coming years. Photo taken 03/18/06.
Florida 60 and Interstate 275 shields posted at the Exit 39A northbound ramp from the Howard Frankland Bridge to Florida 60 west. The ramp above is always congested between 4 and 6 pm. Photo taken 07/30/06.
Now passing under the Interstate 275 freeway, eastbound Florida 60/Memorial Highway reaches the ramp to northbound Interstate 275 to Interstate 4 east and Interstate 75 north. Florida 60 continues east along West Kennedy Boulevard en route to downtown near the Hillsborough River. To connect to the Toll Florida 618/Leroy Selmon Crosstown Expressway, continue east on Florida 60 until Willow Avenue. Turn south on Willow Avenue to the tollway.
The two-lane loop ramp merges onto Interstate 275 northbound ahead of the Lois Avenue diamond interchange. Interstate 275 presently reduces to four overall lanes through the Florida 60 interchange, creating lengthy delays during the daily peak hours. Photo taken 03/18/06.
Florida 60 continues from Memorial Highway to Gardena Avenue and Occident Streets, two additional access points to the adjacent Westshore Plaza Mall. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Beyond Occident Street is the junction with Westshore Boulevard (Hillsborough County 587). The county road provides a connection to Interstate 275 northbound to downtown. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Hillsborough County 587 shields are somewhat rare along the Westshore Boulevard alignment between U.S. 92 (Gandy Boulevard) and Florida 616 (Spruce Street). Photo taken 03/19/06.
Continuing east toward the Beach Park neighborhood of Tampa, Florida 60 crosses U.S. 92 (Dale Mabry Highway) at this busy intersection. U.S. 92 travels south to Gandy Boulevard and north to Hillsborough Avenue on the busy commercial arterial. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Florida 685 (Henderson Boulevard) ties into Florida 60 from the southwest at Oakford Park. One can state that Florida 685 is unsigned while cosigned with Florida 60 or that Florida 60 connects the two discontinuous sections of Florida 685. At the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Florida Avenue, Florida 60 and Florida 685 split. Florida 685 turns north onto Business U.S. 41/Florida Avenue, while east Florida 60 and south Business U.S. 41 continue along Kennedy Boulevard. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Howard Avenue North and Armenia Avenue south constitutes through streets between Interstate 275 and the Hyde Park community south of Florida 60. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Downtown Tampa comes into view as Florida 60 (Kennedy Boulevard) nears the intersection with South Boulevard. Boulevard joins Florida 60 with Bayshore Boulevard to the south and the Riverfront Park to the north. Photo taken 03/19/06.

Hyde Park Avenue south and University Drive North meet Florida 60 (Kennedy Boulevard) at Henry B. Plant Park. Henry B. Plant Park is home to the Henry B. Plant Museum and a riverwalk of the Hillsborough River. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Florida 60 east spans the Hillsborough River into downtown Tampa. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Florida 60 east turns onto Ashley Drive south for one block to Jackson Street east. Kennedy Boulevard carries westbound traffic only through downtown. Ashley Drive north continues to the Exit 44 trumpet interchange of Interstate 275. Photo taken 03/19/06.
Ashley Drive continues south from Florida 60 (Jackson Street) to the Tampa Convention Center. Jackson Street carries the state road east to Nebraska Avenue and its on-ramp to Florida 618 Toll east. Photo taken 03/19/06.
U.S. 41 Business south & Florida 60 east
Florida 60 and Business U.S. 41 meet Toll Florida 618/Crosstown Expressway for the first time near the intersection with Florida 45/Nebraska Avenue. Florida 45 heads north on Nebraska Avenue, and Florida 45 south joins with Business U.S. 41 south and Florida 60 east. Since the Crosstown Expressway crosses Florida 60 from the southwest toward the northeast, a left turn is required to access eastbound Toll Florida 618 en route to unincorporated Brandon and Interstate 75. Eastbound Florida 60 continues along Kennedy Boulevard along with Business U.S. 41/Florida 685 south. Photo taken 12/27/01.
One of Tampa's Streetcars as it passes by U.S. 41 Business & Florida 60 (Channelside Drive) northbound after Kennedy Boulevard. Business U.S. 41/Florida 45 is former U.S. 541, a U.S. highway that was commissioned in 1932 and eliminated in 1951 in favor of Business U.S. 41 because the route was entirely within one state and was very short in length. Photo taken 01/28/07.

U.S. 41 Business departs Florida 60 (Adamo Drive) east for 21st Street south to 22nd Street and the Exit 11 diamond interchange of Florida 618 Toll. Interests to the Port of Tampa and Cruise Terminal 7 should use U.S. 41 Business south. Photo taken 01/28/07.
The previous overhead for U.S. 41 Business's southbound split with Florida 60 east was much simpler with the information it displayed. Note the absence of signs for Florida 45 here. Photo taken 12/27/01.
Although not signed here, Florida 585 emerges from its hidden overlap with U.S. 41 Business along the one-way street couplet of North 21st and 22nd Street. The state road joins Florida 60 (Adamo Drive) with YBor City and College Hill. Photo taken 01/28/07.
Since removed, this set of shields was installed at the Florida 60 east and U.S. 41 Business southbound split. The generic trailblazer of the Crosstown Expressway was the third used for the Florida 618 Toll road. A new trailblazer was unveiled in July 2008 that is supposed to replace all three previous versions. Photo taken 12/27/00.

East of the Tampa metropolitan area, Florida 60 intersects U.S. 17 and U.S. 98 near Bartow. Here, Florida 60 meets U.S. 98 northbound; the two routes continue east on a bypass around downtown Bartow, and they eventually meet U.S. 17. None of the U.S. routes actually enter downtown Bartow; the only numbered road in downtown Bartow is Florida 60A which is signed Business Florida 60. U.S. 98 and Florida 60 travel north of downtown, while U.S. 17 stays pretty far east of downtown. Note that U.S. 98 is signed north-south through the peninsula of Florida and east-west through the panhandle of Florida. Photo taken 12/21/03.
