Interstate 16 is formally known as the Jim Gillis Historic Savannah Parkway between the westbound beginning and Interstate 95. 1 Gillis was a former Georgia Department of Transportation director. Photo taken 05/29/05.
The first westbound reassurance shield posted along Interstate 16. There are no westbound off-ramps between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and junction Interstate 516 (Lynes Parkway). Interstate 16 westbound merges with U.S. 17 & Georgia 404 Spur south at the Gwinett Street half-diamond interchange. U.S. 17 & Georgia 404 Spur enter the scene from the Eugene Talmadge Bridge over the Savannah River. Georgia 404 Spur officially ends at the partial "Y" interchange merge of the two freeways. Georgia 404 represents the unsigned state highway counterpart for all of Interstate 16. Photo taken 05/29/05.
Interstate 16 west & U.S. 17 southbound after their merge near the 37th Street Connector. A partial "Y" interchange brings additional traffic onto the freeway westbound from Georgia 204 (37th Street). Photo taken 05/29/05.
Approaching the directional cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 516, U.S. 80, and Georgia 21-25-26 on Interstate 16 west & U.S. 17 southbound. U.S. 17 southbound departs Interstate 16 westbound via Exit 164B for Interstate 516 & Georgia 21 southbound. U.S. 80 joins Interstate 516 (Lynes Parkway) at Garden City (Exit 7A) to bypass Savannah to Exit 3 (Ogeechee Road). Photo taken 05/29/05.

The end of Georgia 204 from the 37th Street Connector adds an auxiliary lane for Exit 164B, junction Interstate 516 & U.S. 80 west and Georgia 21-25 north. Georgia 21 and 25 share pavement with Interstate 516 to the freeway end at Garden City. From there Georgia 21 and 25 follow individual paths to Port Wentworth. Photo taken 05/29/05.
Exit 164B departs Interstate 16 west & U.S. 17 southbound for Interstate 516 & U.S. 80 west and Georgia 21-25 northbound. Georgia 25 still follows the original alignment of U.S. 17 between Savannah and Port Wentworth. U.S. 80 saw relocation from Louisville Avenue onto Interstate 516 in the mid 1980s. Georgia 21 follows all of Interstate 516 between Garden City and Hunter Army Airfield. Photo taken 05/29/05.
A loop ramp carries U.S. 17 southbound onto Interstate 516 & U.S. 80 east and Georgia 21-25 south. The five-way overlap continues south 1.25 miles to Ogeechee Road. There U.S. 17 & Georgia 25 depart Lynes Parkway for Silk Hope and Richmond Hill and U.S. 80 turns east onto Victory Drive for midtown Savannah. Interstate 516 & Georgia 21 meanwhile continue south to Hunter Army Airfield and DeRenne Avenue. Photo taken 05/29/05.
Interstate 16 leaves the directional-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 516 and company and crosses over the CSX Savannah Yard. Forthcoming is the Exit 162 partial-cloverleaf interchange with Chatham Parkway. Chatham Parkway comprises a north-south divided highway between Garrard Avenue and U.S. 80 & Georgia 26 (Louisville Road). Photo taken 05/29/05.
The mileage sign for Savannah International Airport is numberless probably due to the relocation of the passenger terminal from Dean Forest Road (Georgia 307) to Airways Avenue. Photo taken 05/29/05.
Westbound at the Exit 162 loop ramp to Chatham Parkway on Interstate 16. Chatham Parkway was planned as Georgia 167, a state highway looping between Interstate 516 (then Georgia 26 Loop) to U.S. 80 (Louisville Road). The facility exists today as a county maintained roadway through a scattering of business and industrial parks. Photo taken 05/29/05.
Georgia 307 (Dean Forest Road) crosses paths with Interstate 16 at the Exit 160 diamond interchange. The state highway travels north-south between U.S. 17 & Georgia 25 (Coastal Highway) and Georgia 25 (Main Street) at Garden City. Photo taken 05/29/05.
A full-cloverleaf interchange facilitates the movements between Interstates 16 and 95 at Exit 157. Pictured here is the Interstate 95 southbound off-ramp for Richmond Hill, Brunswick, and Jacksonville, Florida. Photo taken 05/29/05.
