Interstate 77 Southbound

Interstate 77 South
Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 southbound at the Exit 11 ramp departure for Interstate 277 & North Carolina 16, the Brookshire Freeway. The junction between the two freeways consists of a directional cloverleaf stack interchange. The Interstate 277 southbound ramp merges onto North Carolina 16 southbound from the left. The Urban loop returns to Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 via the John Belk Freeway at Exit 9. Photo taken 10/05/01.
Situated within the partial cloverleaf interchange of 5th Street is the 0.25 mile sign bridge of Exit 10B (Trade Street). Ramps to 5th Street are segregated from the Interstate 77 mainline via a collector/distributor roadway that begins at the Interstate 277 stack interchange. Trade Street represents the main east-west surface arterial through the central business district. Photo taken 10/05/01.
Interstate 77 flanks Frazier Park between Trade Street and 2nd Streets at downtown Charlotte. The stretch coincides with the distance between Exits 10A and Exit 10B (Moorehead Street) on the freeway southbound. The upcoming junction with U.S. 29 & North Carolina 27 resides just north of the Interstate 277 southern terminus. Photo taken 10/05/01.
A folded diamond interchange composes the junction of Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 with U.S. 29 & North Carolina 27 (Moorehead Street). The highways overlap between Mint Street (North Carolina 49) and Freedom Drive through the Interstate 77 Exit 10A interchange. Photo taken 10/05/01.
An odd cloverleaf interchange composes the southern terminal interchange of Interstate 277 at Exit 9. The complex features a lengthy southbound collector/distributor roadway that extends southward to the North Carolina 160 (West Boulevard) folded diamond interchange. Displayed in this photograph is the c/d roadway departure for U.S. 74/Exit 9C (Wilkinson Boulevard) westbound, Interstate 277 north & U.S. 74 east/Exit 9B (John Belk Freeway) and North Carolina 160/Exit 9A. Photo taken 10/05/01.
Southbound Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 at the diamond interchange with Arrowood Road. Attached to the Exit 2 sign bridge is the 0.25 mile overhead for the Exit 1 symmetrical stack interchange of the Charlotte Beltway. The c/d roadway for Interstate 485 departs before the Arrowood Road on-ramp merges onto Interstate 77 south. Photo taken 10/05/01.
The Interstate 485 high speed ramps ascend above the Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 mainline. The beltway is complete between Interstate 77 and Interstate 85 to the east and north as of November 2003. The link to Interstate 85 and the Airport is slated for completion by Spring 2004. Photo taken 10/05/01.
The Exit 1 off-ramp to Westinghouse Boulevard sneaks underneath of the Interstate 485 flyover ramps ahead of the Beltway on-ramps to Interstate 77 & U.S. 21 southbound. The ramp protrudes west of the stack interchange before entering the diamond interchange with the east-west surface highway. A slip ramp between the Interstate 485 on-ramps to this ramp is provided. Photo taken 10/05/01.
Scenes Pertaining to Interstate 77
U.S. 21 northbound merges onto Interstate 77 at Exit 79. The overlap coincides with the split of U.S. 21 into Business and Bypass components. The Bypass U.S. 21 freeway pre-exists the Interstate 77 designation through the Elkin (pop. 4,109) and Jonesville (pop. 1,464) communities. Thus when Interstate 77 came to pass, U.S. 21 Bypass became part of the alignment. Depicted here are junction shields for Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 Bypass posted on North Carolina 67 eastbound for the Exit 82 partial cloverleaf interchange. Photo taken 10/05/01.
