Exit 1D quickly departs the Benson Beltline outer loop just south of Western Boulevard at the Hinton and Wynnewood neighborhoods of west Raleigh. A half-diamond interchange joins Melbourne Road with Interstate 440 & U.S. 1 between Kaplan and Powell Drives. The one-mile guide sign of Exit 1 for the Interstate 440 merge with Interstate 40 & U.S. 64 exists at the Melbourne Drive overpass. The U.S. 64 shield was added after the initial installation of the guide sign because the federal route used to follow New Bern Avenue through the city. The federal highway now follows Interstate 440 from the Knightdale Bypass south to Interstate 40 at its junction with U.S. 1 & Interstate 440 ahead. Photo taken 07/12/05. |

The ramps to Interstate 40 & U.S. 64 eastbound depart Interstate 440 west & U.S. 1 south via a collector/distributor roadway system. The same c/d roadway continues beyond the Interstate 440 merge onto Interstate 40 east to the U.S. 1 & 64 interchange with Walnut Street to the southwest.
