County Highways
We stepped in a bunch of mud to setup this photograph of a disgustingly old Washington County 8 triangular reassurance shield near the junction with U.S. 45. This style of shield was the standard for the state of Alabama before it switched to the standard pentagon. That change was implemented by the 1950s or 1960s by our best guess. Photo taken 02/10/02.
Old style Marion County 11 shield on Marion County 35 northbound. This assembly is posted one mile south of the Exit 14 interchange of Future Interstate 22/U.S. 78 near the community of Hamilton. Photo taken 09/25/03.
Not far south from the Marion County 11 shield depicted above is this relic of a shield on Lamar County 35 southbound. This cutout measures around 18 inches and most likely dates from the 1940s or earlier. Photo taken 09/25/03.
Escambia County 55 pentagon, posted just north of the Florida state line north of Jay. This county route is a continuation of Florida 89 between the state line and Alabama 41 south of Brewton. Otherwise the highway is a rural two-lane affair. Photo taken 08/24/02.
Alabama 13 northbound at Fayette County 66 in extreme northeastern Fayette County. Alabama 13 northbound crosses into Walker County en route to Eldridge and U.S. 78 ahead. Photo taken 09/25/03.
Miscellaneous
Old Eagle brand traffic signals on a side street in Bay Minette. The center piece is an older one-piece four-way signal. The assembly is located one block south of the U.S. 31 downtown square. One block to the east of this traffic signal is a more modern four-way traffic light assembly, with individual signals for each direction. Both of these intersections receive very light traffic. In all likelihood, the necessity of these signals decreased from when they were originally installed. Photo taken 03/23/02.
