Tennessee 158 - James White Parkway

All of James White Parkway between Main Street and Hill Avenues in downtown (junction Tennessee 71) and Interstate 40 to the north was reconstructed between 2005 and 2007. The project included and outright closing of the entire freeway from December 17, 2006 to September 21, 2007 so that crews could demolish and rebuild the freeway and parallel Hall of Fame Drive. Included are a new expanded viaduct, redesigned ramps for Summit Hill Drive, and a cut and cover tunnel. The project represents Phase II of the overall SmartFix40 project designed to rebuild Interstate 40 and its approach ramps leading from downtown Knoxville. Photos displayed below display the original design of the four-lane freeway.

See a map of the project area at the SmartFix40 web site here.

Tennessee 158 East
Tennessee 158 (Neyland Drive) hugs the north banks of the Tennessee River south of the University of Tennessee campus. The parkway provides a four lane corridor with several peaks at the river itself. Pictured here at milepost 2 are the river crossings of the Norfolk-Southern Railroad and U.S. 441 (Henley Street) and the Knoxville skyline. Photo taken 08/23/03.
A truss bridge composes the Norfolk-Southern Railroad crossing of the Tennessee River. The north-south line cuts through the nearby 1982 World's Fair Park to the west of downtown Knoxville. Photo taken 08/23/03.

Tennessee 158 transitions into the Downtown Loop freeway east of the U.S. 441 high level bridge. The freeway directly ties into Exit 388 of Interstate 40 northeast of the central business district. Photo taken 08/23/03.

Tennessee 158 eastbound at Tennessee Volunteer Landing and the Gay Street Bridge. The freeway carries four lanes from downtown eastward to Tennessee 71 (James White Parkway) and Interstate 40. Photo taken 08/23/03.
The Gay Street Bridge as seen at the Volunteer Landing exit gore point of Tennessee 158 eastbound. U.S. 441 and Gay Street compose the only Tennessee River crossings between downtown Knoxville and the southern sections of the city. Photo taken 08/23/03.

Tennessee 71 extends east of Tennessee 158 as the limited access James River Parkway. The freeway straddles the Tennessee River eastward to South Knox Boulevard where the highway crosses the waterway. The highway sees exits with Hall of Fame Drive for the National Women's Basketball Hall of Fame and Hill Avenue & Riverside Drive north of the river. Photo taken 08/23/03.
A concrete arch bridge carries Hill Drive high above the Tennessee 158 & 71 split. Departing to the right is the Hall of Fame Drive off-ramp of Tennessee 71 southbound. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Tennessee 158 eastbound ascends onto a viaduct, since torn down and rebuilt, on its northern reaches to Interstate 40. A half-diamond interchange facilitated the movements between the north-south freeway and Magnolia Avenue (U.S. 11-25W-70) - these ramps were removed during the SmartFix40 reconstruction of James White Parkway. Beyond the former Magnolia Avenue off-ramp is the northern terminus of Tennessee 158 at Interstate 40. The junction between the two freeways constitutes tri-level stack interchange to be reconstructed during the SmartFix40 project. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Tennessee 158 West
The first southbound exit of Tennessee 158 departs for Summit Hill Drive. Known otherwise as Vine Avenue, Summit Hill Drive travels east-west between U.S. 441 north of the central business district to Dandridge Avenue. A six to eight-lane viaduct replaces the original elevated highway of James White Parkway southward from Interstate 40 to junction Tennessee 71. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Tennessee 71 southbound splits from Tennessee 158 as the James White Parkway. The James White Parkway travels east along the Tennessee River than south as South Knox Boulevard to the Sevierville Pike and Lake Forest. The freeway is slated to extend even further south in long range plans. However, it is unlikely to clear environmental and funding hurdles in the more immediate future. Photo taken 08/23/03.
Tennessee 158 westbound at the Cumberland Avenue off-ramp for downtown Knoxville. Cumberland Avenue travels six blocks from the Downtown Loop to U.S. 441 (Henley Street) through the central business district. The avenue is one way in the westbound direction. Photo taken 08/23/03.

The Henley Street Bridge of U.S. 441 over the Tennessee River and Tennessee 158 (Neyland Drive). The state highway transitions into a surface parkway at Walnut and Locust Streets. From there westward the highway follows the Tennessee River north banks to the University of Tennessee campus. Photo taken 08/23/03.
