U.S. Highway 19 & Georgia 9
U.S. 19, a major transcontinental federal highway connecting Bradenton, Florida, with Erie, Pennsylvania, passes through the heart of Georgia. It follows secret Georgia 3 south of Atlanta and a combination of Georgia 400, 9, and 11 north of Atlanta. U.S. 19 enters the Peach State from Florida 12 miles south of Thomasville, paralleling Interstate 75/U.S. 41 to the west. The federal highway serves Camilla, Albany, Americus, Butler, Thomaston, and Griffin before entering the Atlanta metropolitan area. Following city streets, U.S. 19 uses primary arterials such as Dixie Highway, Metropolitan Parkway, Northside Drive, Peachtree Road, and Roswell Road before moving onto the Georgia 400/Turner McDonald Parkway north of the city. The freeway continues north to Coal Mountain, then changes into an expressway followed by a two-lane rural highway. U.S. 19 follows Georgia 9 north of Atlanta and merges with it near Dahlonega. Passing near the highest point in Georgia (Brasstown Bald, elevation 4,784 feet), U.S. 19 departs the Peach State for the panhandle of North Carolina north of Blairsville.
