U.S. 158 east
U.S. 158 eastbound reassurance shield, posted after the intersection with Sandy Hook Road (north-south road between Shawboro and Old Trappe). The stretch between Belcross (North Carolina 34) and Barco (North Carolina 168) carries two lanes through farmland and swampland. Photo taken 03/01.
The junction of U.S. 158 and North Carolina 12 at Southern Shores. This sign bridge guides motorists to the Outer Banks Welcome Center, North Carolina 12 north (Ocean Boulevard) for Duck and Corolla, and North Carolina 12 south (Virginia Dare Trail) for Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. U.S. 158 stays inland on the Croatan Highway southbound through to Nags Head and Whalebone Junction. Photo taken 02/01.
U.S. 158 draws to a close at Whalebone Junction with U.S. 64 west and North Carolina 12 (Virginia Dare Trail). The sign bridge depicted here displays the original configuration where U.S. 264 overlapped with U.S. 64 east from Manns Harbor to U.S. 158. In 2003, U.S. 264 saw truncation to Manns Harbor west of the new Roanoke Island bridge. No end sign is posted for U.S. 158. Photo taken 12/26/00.
U.S. 158 west
U.S. 158 westbound near Milepost 12 and Jockeys Ridge State Park. The naturally occurring sand dunes are visible to the north in this Croatan Highway photograph. Development almost caused the dunes demise. Before the park was designated, developed encroached on the sandy areas, adding to erosion and thus threatening the dunes existance. The land was thus protected as part of a state park, and now is open year round for all to enjoy. Photo taken 12/16/01.
Northbound on the Croatan Highway near Milepost 10. U.S. 158 sees several traffic lights and heavy development along its 16 mile routing in Dare County. Crossing the street is somewhat easy during the Winter, but very difficult without the help of a light in the Spring and Summer tourist seasons. Photo taken 12/16/01.
A sign bridge is posted at the Croatan Highway junction with North Carolina 12 (Ocean Boulevard & Virginia Dare Trail). U.S. 158 turns westward at this point, for the final two miles in Dare County before crossing the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge. North Carolina 12 continues northward for another 20 miles to Duck and Corolla. Photo taken 02/01.
North Carolina 3 junction shield on U.S. 158 westbound at Bertha. North Carolina 3, now North Carolina 136, spurs eastward from U.S. 158 to the community of Poplar Branch. This is the only sign of North Carolina 3/136 posted along U.S. 158 in either direction. Photo taken 12/17/01.
